Belknap is from Damariscotta the state of Maine. Parents include David Belknap and Louise Belknap. She attended Lincoln Academy, Newcastle Maine. When she was at Middlebury College in Vermont she discovered an interest in acting. The American Conservatory Theater granted her an honorary degree as a master of Fine Arts.
